A study of the fundamentals of effective written expression, with emphasis on grammar, syntax, and usage, and on the development of thesis-directed essays that make use of evidence and argumentation to validate their theses. Coupled with attention to the fundamentals of research, including quoting, paraphrasing, and summarizing effectively and accurately and citing sources correctly, using any of a number of forms for citations and works cited. Required of all first-year students with the exception of students who evince superior facility in written expression.

English V01A is a writing course that emphasizes critical reading, expository and argumentative writing, and mastery of library research techniques. It includes instruction and practice in critical thinking, in analytical reading and evaluation of written work, including at least one book-length work of significant literature, and in the methods of clearly communicating and supporting ideas in organized, coherent essays. Students are required to write a minimum of 6500 formal words, including a research project that is based on essays, literature read in class, personal experience, and college-level research.

English 107 is an intensive one-semester writing course that emphasizes research as a heuristic for learning, writing an intellectual dialogue with the authorities represented in the evidence found, and which engages students in judging the merit and appropriateness of discovered evidence.

English 299 focuses on learning how to edit one’s own writing for errors and developing more sophisticated ways to make arguments, cite evidence, and convey opinion in academic writing. English 299 supports the development of more effective writing and editing.
Interdisciplinary Writing

English 330 provides opportunities for individual and collaborative writing that integrates research from a variety of disciplines. Students work on projects that incorporate various forms of research, including electronic, and which result in both multimedia presentations and academic papers.
